Pelzmärten (Pelzmärten - "Martin in furs") is a figure derived from and opposite to St. Martin the gift-giver, much as Belsnickel ("Nicholas in furs") was the opposite of St. Nicholas. Rising up around the same era as the St. Nicholas figure, there was the St. Martin figure: a gift-giving, long-robed bishop who visited in winter. Although St. Nicholas has supplanted St. Martin as a Christmastide bringer of gifts, it is to St. Martin that the following tune looks for inspiration.
This piece for organ, manuals only, is good for St Martin's Day (November 11) through Epiphany.
