I was thrilled to be invited to write a new piece for both this combination of instruments and this duo in particular. Coco Bender was a piano student of mine many years ago when she was in high school. Now she is a colleague with whom I discuss teaching and collaborate in projects like these. After hearing her and Margarite Waddell perform together I knew this would a lovely compositional opportunity. The duo suggested using Robert Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro for horn and piano as a springboard for the piece since it would be on their program as well. I immediately knew I had to structure our piece as an Allegro and Adagio to balance the scale (no pun intended,really). The phrase “Peaks and Valleys” popped into my head as I was working on the music. It was something my late father often used to say in the context of “Life is full of peaks and valleys..”
I am an avid hiker and somehow the images of climbing a peak and then descending into a beautiful valley upon came into view. Of course, the phrase is also a metaphor for the ups and downs everyones lives have. As I am growing older, I think that simple concept has somehow meant more these days as a way to remind oneself that the moment is so transitory.
The piece alludes to the Schumann in the Adagio section especially with a bit of a melodic quotation as well as the overall flavor of romantic harmonies and dialogue between the instruments.
