PAX by Ivo Antognini SSAATTBB - Digital Sheet Music

By Ivo Antognini

“O Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,” reads the beginning of this simple prayer, attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, but of dubious origin. Whoever the author of this short text may be, they have managed to perfectly summarize what all of humanity needs in order to achieve true peace. The composition begins with eight voices taking turns, in Latin, to invoke God (Domine... .Domine...) and their voices come together to create a great, rather dissonant chord, signifying that all the peoples of the earth are asking for and desiring this peace. The first part of “PAX” is in Latin, and the melodies of the individual voices vaguely recall ancient Gregorian chants, at times ancestral, as if to say that since the dawn of time, man has been imploring God to bring peace to the world. The composition continues in English, and the themes become more modern, singable, and recognizable, ending once again with the Latin invocation "Domine. ..Domine...". This time, however, it all ends with lower voices that convey a serenity that was not there before. The metaphorical meaning of this ending is that we must start from the bottom, from ourselves: if we are not at peace within ourselves, we will never be bearers of peace, and this concept is very evident throughout the text of the prayer.
