From Tempo Vero Editions Classical Repertoire: Impressionist & Modern French

This edition of Pavane, Op. 50 by Gabriel Fauré transcribes his own 1913 Welte-Mignon piano roll performance, capturing his personal interpretation, including tempo, dynamics, and pedaling, which differs in meaningful ways from previously published scores.

Composed in 1887, Pavane was first published as an orchestral work in 1888, with a piano version following in 1889. In 1913, Fauré recorded the piece on a Welte-Mignon reproducing piano roll. The Welte-Mignon system captured not only the precise key movements but also the subtle nuances of dynamics and pedaling, enabling a lifelike reproduction of the performance.

While Pavane is typically performed at 84 beats per minute, Fauré is believed to have favored a faster tempo. Conductor Sir Adrian Boult, who heard Fauré perform Pavane on several occasions, recalled the composer playing it at no less than 100 beats per minute. This faster tempo is consistent with the piano roll recording.

This edition presents Pavane in a form that reflects an original interpretation by Fauré, offering pianists a historically informed and musically faithful performance experience.
