Gabriel Faure’s Pavane is one of the most elegant and recognizable works in the French repertoire of the late nineteenth century. Composed in 1887, it was originally written for orchestra, although a choral part with a text by Robert de Montesquiou was later added. Its title evokes an old courtly dance of the Renaissance, slow-moving and solemn in character, which Fauré transforms into a piece of refined melancholy.
The work is built around a serene, gently flowing melody, supported by delicate harmony and a restrained, almost ceremonial rhythm. It does not seek drama, but rather a contained beauty, full of grace, nostalgia, and distinction. In it one can hear Fauré’s characteristic musical language: clarity, balance, expressive subtlety, and an emotion that never imposes itself, but is gently suggested.
Although brief, the Pavane creates an atmosphere of great charm, like an image suspended in time. Its discreet elegance and slightly nostalgic air have made it one of the composer’s best-loved works and a symbol of the French taste for delicacy and proportion.
This version has been prepared specifically to be performed by a student orchestra. The piece has been made slightly easier to play by being transposed up a semitone, and the orchestration has been completed using the standard full orchestra scoring, with piano and glockenspiel added.
