“My aim in this piece is to search for and expose the various unrevealed possibilities of the recorder to convey a musical message in a way the recorder has never been treated. Simplicity of structure, lack of keys and pads, etc., flexibility in producing various tonecolors, intonations and very delicate nuances by means of the embouchure and hand manipulations are unique characteristics the recorder genuinely possesses. They make it possible for a player to express his feelings more sensitively and plainly with great freedom than on the mechanically-equipped modern woodwind instruments such as flute or clarinet. The title 'Pastorale' originates from the impression which I got from the sound of a pipe (a sort of oboe) the Arabian Bedouin who live in their vast desert play in their daily life. This plain but somehow delicate sound of the world that has never been spoiled by material culture impressed and stimulated me so much to write this work.” Kikuko Masumoto.
