The song is widely regarded as one of the greatest heavy metal songs of all time. It reached number 4 on the UK singles chart and number 61 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Black Sabbath's first song to place on both of those charts.
This arrangement of Paranoid for Brass Band was made for the Red Admiral Entertainment Contest performance by Friezland Band, who performed a programme based around Anarchy. The exploits of Ozzy Osbourne definitely fit the bill. This arrangement takes the heavy metal song and transports into a jazz style, with a slow start contrasted by and upbeat big band body. The performance at the Red Admiral Entertainment Contest won both the awards for Most Entertaining Programme and Best New Composition or Arrangement.
