Michael Bond based Paddington Bear on a lone teddy bear that he noticed on a shelf in a London shop—saying "it looked rather forlorn"—on Christmas Eve 1956, which he bought as a present for his wife. The bear inspired Bond to write a story and in ten days, he had written the first book. He named the bear Paddington as he lived near the station at the time and thought it would be a good name for the character. One of the best-known adaptations of Paddington Bear is the stop-motion animated BBC television series. The series was written by Michael Bond and directed and animated by Ivor Wood. It was first broadcast on 5 January 1976. The storylines were based on comedic incidents from the books, chosen to appeal to the TV audience which included much younger children than those the books were written for. The memorable theme music was composed by Herbert Chappell, a British composer, conductor and film-maker - he had originally written "Size Ten Shuffle" for the BBC's dramatisation of Lord Peter Wimsey (1972), and it was later adopted as the theme for Paddington Bear from 1976–1980. This wonderful, light-hearted piece would sound perfect on a bandstand in summer time, or in a concert of music for children (young and old).
