The Overture, nicknamed "The Representation of Chaos" is a 5-minute work of genius where Haydn paints the dark, frightening void just prior to creation by using snippets of melody, vague rhythms, strange harmonies, awkward dissonances and sudden outbursts (Toronto Mendelssohn Choir notes).
Randall Malmstrom's excellent arrangement of this work for 8-part Trombone Ensemble is scored for alto, 5 tenors, bass and contrabass trombones and is appropriate for advanced performers.
