Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1879552).Wagner composed Rienzi, his third opera, betwwn 1836 and 1840, during which time he moved from the Baltic port of Riga, where he was muscial director at the municipal theatre to Paris, where he vainly hoped to have the opera staged.
He then returned to Germany, and to Dresden, where Rienzi was first performed at the Royal Saxon State Theatre, on 20 October 1842. It was a sensational success.
