Over the Storm is an original composition for stage band plus flute. It features a flugelhorn solo, but the Bb clarinet, trumpet, or soprano saxophone are easy alternatives without any need for transposition. While the flugelhorn carries the lead throughout the piece, there are breaks for the soloist with the melody passed to the flute and alto sax, the full woodwind section, and also the trombone section. The rhythm section features an active countermelodic bass line and supporting drum, guitar, and piano parts. Written for intermediate-level players, Over the Storm presents opportunities to improve overall dynamic contrast and tight ensemble playing.
Over the Storm casts the mental image of an eagle rising powerfully through the thunder, wind, and lightning to soar effortlessly and joyfully in the brilliant sunshine above the turbulent dark storm clouds.
