Raphael D. Thöne was born in Moers. He holds a degree in composition from the Robert Schumann University of Music (Prof. Manfred Trojahn) and a degree in music theory from the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen (Prof. Dr. Dieter Torkewitz). He received scholarships to study film scoring/composition and conducting at Berklee College of Music, Boston, and Boston Conservatory (USA). Ph.D. from the University of Music and Performing Arts and the University of Vienna with a thesis on the symphonic works of Malcolm Arnold.

Thöne holds a professorship at the University of Music, Drama, and Media in Hanover (Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover). He teaches music theory, orchestration, and arranging with a special focus on orchestration and applied media composition.
