Ouverture sur des rythmes euclidiens is an energetic and rhythm-driven work for wind ensemble, inspired by the groundbreaking research of mathematician Godfried Toussaint on the mathematical foundations of musical rhythm.

At the heart of the piece lies the concept of Euclidean rhythms—patterns in which musical events are distributed as evenly as possible over a given number of beats, a principle rooted in an algorithm developed by the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid around 300 BC. These rhythmic structures, found in many sub-Saharan African traditions, reveal fascinating connections between music, mathematics, and even scientific fields such as physics.

This work explores two specific Euclidean rhythms:

E(7;12), a variant of the traditional West African bembé rhythm, which forms the main theme
E(5;16), associated with the bossa nova, itself derived from African rhythmic heritage carried across continents
These patterns are developed and transformed throughout the piece, creating a vibrant and evolving rhythmic landscape.

Driven by a strong sense of groove, the music should be performed with energy and momentum, embracing a style close to funk: bold, grounded accents contrast with short, sharp gestures, generating a powerful and engaging rhythmic flow.

Scored for wind ensemble with optional additional parts for double bass and contrabass saxhorn, this piece has been premiered on January 25 by the Musique des Troupes de Marine and the Musique de l’Artillerie, conducted by Emmanuel Poux at the Conservatoire Claude Debussy

This piece stands out for:
- A dynamic and original addition to the wind ensemble repertoire.
- Its unique blend of mathematics and musical creativity
- The use of Euclidean rhythms rooted in global musical traditions
- A strong rhythmic drive inspired by funk and groove-based music

Ideal for advanced wind ensembles seeking fresh, engaging, and rhythmically compelling repertoire, Ouverture sur des rythmes euclidiens delivers both intellectual depth and immediate musical impact.
