Commissioned for the Wisconsin Lutheran High School's centennial year, this expansive work incorporates the Welsh folk song “The Ash Grove” in a lush and varied treatment. The main melody, played first by horns and baritone, returns near the end in a glorious, fully orchestrated chorale. In between is a beautiful secondary theme played by oboe and flute soloists followed by a dramatic fugal section. A musically rewarding and effective piece. (6:00).

Artful Arrangement and Rich Textures
While not a vocal piece, 'Out of the Shadows' truly showcases excellent voice-leading within the concert band. Sweeney's orchestration is masterful; from the initial horn and baritone melody to the soaring oboe/flute solos, the textures are beautifully crafted to support and elevate. The fugal section is particularly engaging, demonstrating clear melodic independence and ensemble blend. A well-written, rewarding score.

Excellent Repertoire for Developing Bands
This Michael Sweeney piece is a fantastic Grade 3 option for high school or community bands. The 'Ash Grove' theme offers lyrical moments for woodwinds (oboe/flute solos!), while the fugal section provides excellent rhythmic and reading challenges across the ensemble. The full score and parts ensure all students are engaged. Highly recommended for musical development!

A Beautiful and Rewarding Band Experience!
Our community band recently played 'Out of the Shadows,' and it was a joy! Michael Sweeney's arrangement of 'The Ash Grove' is truly lush. The Grade 3 difficulty was perfectly challenging for us, with lovely oboe and flute solos and an engaging fugue. It felt very rewarding to play and sounded fantastic. Definitely a highlight for our concerts!
