The four Fantasies are the first of a set of nine published in 1620 for treble, mean (middle) and bass instruments. The last five were written for two treble and bass. They are composed in the old modes which were about to be replaced by modern major and minor scales. The Fantasias were dedicated to Mr Edward Wray, one of the grooms of King James the first's bed chamber. Gibbons , who died in 1625, was at the peak of his composing career and the Fantasias represent the culmination of this form of composition.
These pieces are worth exploring by players of intermediate standard and above.
