When Reubke, a famous pupil of Franz Liszt's, died in 1858 at the age of only 24 his achievements included two monumental works (a piano sonata and an organ sonata) and a few smaller compositions. This Urtext edition brings together all the organ works transmitted to our time in a new edition: the organ sonata, also known by the title of the 94th Psalm, whose words inspired its content, the Trio for two manuals and pedal and the Adagio, which is a variant of the Adagio section from the sonata; as an album leaf in the Album of the princess Marie von Sayn-Wittgenstein arranged on two staves the piece will be playable on the piano as well.The Sonata, whose style and virtuosity show the influence of Liszt, is one of the greatest organ works of the whole Romantic period. The Trio, a musically charming but technically less demanding piece, should represent a welcome addition to the teaching repertoire for organ. The only original documents remaining for the trio and the sonata are the first editions, the autographs are lost. In this new edition we have attempted to correct obvious mistakes in the first impression and to offer cautious suggestions for improvements in dubious instances. By contrast the Adagio is transmitted in Reubke's autograph entry in the Album of Marie von Sayn-Wittgenstein. Because this is the only autograph score by Reubke the piece is published twice: as a modern edition and as a facsimile.
