Through the years, many well-known literary works have been written about winter and snow. Literary greats such as Frost, Dickinson, Longfellow, Wordsworth and Emerson have described the wonder and excitement that fills the air as the first flakes of winter begin their descent to the ground. As winter places its claim on the earth, we look forward to those snow days among the cold and dark months ahead. As a child, many hours were spent by building a snowman, having a snowball fight, making snow ice cream (a favorite of my dear Daddy), and enjoying the beauty of the world around me. I remember one year we even made snowballs and packed them in the freezer to be enjoyed in the summer months. There’s definitely something about a snowfall that brings out the child in me!The text of this piece focuses on the landscape being similar to a bare canvas on which we decide how to “paint” the perfect snow scene. We then may wish to share with others, thus creating memories such as those above. While teaching / learning, please consider the following: The melody should be performed legato throughout. When singing the wider intervals, remember to “think” the note before singing it. Work towards a beautiful blend by unifying all vowels. Always be mindful of correct syllabic stress. It’s the little things that make the difference between mediocre and musical.Enjoy!.
