The song was written for Lew Leslie’s International Revue and introduced on Broadway by entertainer Harry Richman in 1930. It emerged during the Great Depression and was embraced as a piece of upbeat escapism for audiences worn down by economic hardship.
Because of this harmonic and melodic flexibility, it quickly became a favorite vehicle for jazz musicians, inviting reharmonization, rhythmic play, and extended solos.
