Dave Grusin’s theme for On Golden Pond is a quiet masterclass in emotional restraint—music that seems to drift in rather than announce itself, much like the lake at the center of the story. When Dave Grusin was asked to score the film, he understood immediately that this was not a movie that needed grand gestures. It needed honesty, warmth, and space to breathe. The result was a theme built around simple piano figures, gentle harmonic movement, and a sense of reflective calm that mirrors the film’s exploration of aging, memory, and reconciliation.
I used the version on his Cinemagic album for this transcription, which is true to the original except for some adaptation of the orchestral parts of the score. It should be suitable for the early advanced pianist and is guaranteed to be loved by audiences.
