Title: Samaras/Hiew - Olympic Hymn (transcription for solo piano)
Composed by Spyridon Samaras (1861-1917) with lyrics written by Kostis Palamas (1859 - 1943), the Olympic Hymn (sometimes known as the Olympic Anthem) was a choral cantata composed for the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Inspired by her love for sports particularly the Olympic Games, then 19-year-old Hiew Tzejia* was struck with the idea to create a version for solo piano, inspired by some of the virtuosic concert transcriptions by Sir Stephen Hough. First arranged in 2012, the work was subsequently revised in 2021, shortly before she recorded it to be released as a YouTube video in conjunction with Olympic Day on 23 June 2021.

*The arranger’s name is natively Chinese and follows Chinese naming conventions (where surnames are placed before given names), i.e. ‘Hiew’ is her surname and ‘Tzejia’ is her given name, and shall remain in this order when her full name is displayed. When performing this piece in public, the names of the composer and arranger must be mentioned jointly on the programme. In this case it should be ’Samaras/Hiew’ or anything that conveys the same representation, and not ‘Samaras/Tzejia’.
