Ole Man River by Jerome Kern Brass Quintet - Digital Sheet Music

By Jerome Kern

This song is from the 1927 Broadway musical "Showboat," music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein (before his more celebrated partnership with Richard Rodgers). It was most famously performed by Paul Robeson in a 1931 film version of the play, (It was remade in 1951 with Ava Gardner playing a mulatta singer in a part that would have gone to Lena Horne had the producers not feared the wrath of Southern moviegoers.) The story includes exposition of the plight of African-Americans in the South of the Gilded Age; as a result, its content (including the lyrics of this song) were altered to accommodate racist audiences. This arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, trombone, and, in a featured roll, since the original was sung by a basso, tuba.If you'd like other instrumentation, please contact me at [email protected].
