Oklahoma Skies was commissioned by Justin Pourtorkan for the Edmond North High School Orchestra to commemorate the astounding contributions to music education that Peter Markes made during his tenure as director of orchestras at Edmond North High School. I wanted to capture the spirit and beauty of Oklahoma as well as a bit of the personality of Peter who is a native son of Oklahoma. I heard many stories of his humor and also wanted to capture this as part of the piece. I wanted to write a truly “Americana” piece. You will hear wide-open sounds as well as earthy violin fiddle stylings. This is not only a tribute to Oklahoma but to Peter and the band he plays in called Horseshoe Road. Every instrument is active in this work and made to feel a part. This is an advanced work for symphonic orchestra that demands a high level from every player. The listener will feel the beauty of the wide-open spaces on this tour through the zenith of the Oklahoma Skies!
