De nombreuses constellations étant nommées d’après des personnages de la mythologie grecque, le compositeur étudia les histoires qui ont donné naissance aux mythes et décida de fonder son oeuvre sur celles-ci. Le sous-titre - Une outrance pour orchestre d’harmonie - provient du fait que les mythes (l’Hydre, Cassiopée, Orion et Pégase) ont uniquement fourni l’inspiration initiale pour chacun des mouvements, qui ont ensuite suivi leur propre développement musical.
