Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by David Burndrett. This edition: pdf. Classical, Instructional. 14 pages. David Burndrett #1372721. Published by David Burndrett (A0.1812617).Ode to Joy – Flexible Wind Ensemble
This flexible arrangement of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” has been specially created for school wind ensembles and mixed-ability groups, allowing a wide range of instruments and ability levels to perform together with confidence.
The music is organised into four flexible parts, with multiple instrument options available for each line. This makes the arrangement ideal for ensembles with varied or incomplete instrumentation, enabling directors to programme the piece using the players they have available.
Instrumentation & Part Structure:
Part 1: Flute, Oboe or Recorder, Trumpet in B♭
Part 2: Clarinet in B♭, Alto Saxophone
Part 3: Horn in F, Tenor Saxophone
Part 4: Baritone Saxophone, Bass Clarinet in B♭, Bassoon
Optional: Piano (doubling harmony and bass for rehearsal or performance support)
The score is presented in concert pitch, with individual parts transposed appropriately for each instrument. The optional piano part provides additional harmonic support and is particularly useful for rehearsals or smaller ensembles.
At approximately 1 minute 20 seconds, this short arrangement is ideal for concert programmes, assemblies, curriculum teaching, or as an accessible introduction to Beethoven’s music. It pairs naturally with other flexible wind ensemble arrangements and works especially well alongside lyrical or slow-tempo repertoire.
Download includes the score and all of the parts.
