I had composed a number of works for piano and strings, but I had thrown 2 attempts to compose a string quartet in the trash. It was clear that I needed a new approach. That approach was: imagine 4 people around a card table, talking and gesturing. Then give them strings instruments with which to do that talking-and-gesturing. I sketched 2 dozen little samples, put the best of them (13) in a reasonable order, and used a variation of the first one to make number 14.
