I partly had in mind my colleague Sean Beavers, a guitar professor at my school, when I wrote this challenging work for 4 guitars. The 7/8 meter, plus metrical changes, and the fast tempo, present rhythmic issues for the players. The 'obstruction' idea occurs at the various tone clusters scattered throughout. A slower, quasi-improvisatory middle section provides contrast to the fast outer sections.
