Oboe Concerto by Richard Strauss arranged for B♭ Clarinet and Piano. This work was composed in 1945, after the end of World War II, by Richard Strauss. The inspiration came when John de Lancie, an oboist serving as an American soldier stationed in Germany, visited Strauss and asked him, "Have you ever considered writing an oboe concerto?" Deeply moved by the idea, the then 81-year-old Strauss completed the piece within just a few months.
The concerto is characterized by its beautifully lyrical melodic lines, with long, song-like phrases and a transparency reminiscent of Mozart. Although a late work in his life, it possesses a fresh brilliance that belies the composer’s age, and it remains one of the most frequently performed oboe concertos today.
In this remarkable arrangement for clarinet and piano, the warmth and flexibility of the clarinet are fully utilized, capturing the elegance and singing quality of the original.
