The pastoral style, which was so popular in the Baroque period, infiltrates the cantata Du Hirte Israel, höre (You Shepherd of Israel, hark), BWV 104. The opening chorus features two oboes and taille (alto oboe) performing a delightful accompaniment of triplets, dotted rhythms, and extended pedal points. The first aria is joined by two oboes d’amore, while the second aria is constructed on a bucolic 12/8 rhythm. The pastoral mood pervades the entire cantata, which was composed in 1724 for Misericordias Domini (the second Sunday after Easter), dedicated to the "Good Shepherd" (Gospel of John 10:12-16).
