Originally written for a secular song in 1601, the melody commonly associated with O Sacred Head, Now Wounded was composed by German composer and organist Hans Leo Hassler (1564–1612). It was later adapted for sacred use and became widely known through its inclusion in works by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750).
