Specifically, it is an Aria (#21) which was written for flute, strings and Alto Solo. I reduced the the strings to one string part and piano while keeping the Alto Solo intact.
The piece was commissioned while Mendelssohn was in London conducting two years before he died. It was originally sung with the libretto in English before Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
