Barnby was a 19th century organist, choirmaster, and hymnist from England. Gurney was a late 19th century writer and hymnist from England as well. This work was called a "hymn tune in the natural style and idiom … of our own time." Originally an anthem, it was shortened into a hymn tune by 1890. A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of section B with the aid of an Italian augmented sixth chord. A descant by yours truly is then added beginning in section C.
