Composed by David Neff, Philipp Nicolai. Christian,Christmas,Renaissance,Sacred. Octavo. 4 pages. David Neff #3874571. Published by David Neff (A0.829022).
This joyful anthem for four-part mixed chorus is especially appropriate in the season of after Christmas when Christians celebrate Christ as the source of spiritual light, and for the commemorations of Jesus’ Transfiguration (August 6 and on the last Sunday after the Epiphany). It works equally well in any joyous season.
It is based on a hymn by Philipp Nicolai, a Lutheran pastor born in 1556, just ten years after the death of Martin Luther. As a part of the generation following Luther, he helped shape the popular hymnody of the period. His hymn "O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright" marks a transition from the churchly hymns of Luther’s time to the emphasis on an individual relationship with Jesus-exemplified here by the writer’semphasis on Christ as the bridegroom of the soul.
This 3-verse anthem employs a different rhythm for each stanza. The triple meter second verse has a joyous, dance-like quality that befits the wedding feast and expresses the elation implicit in the words "Then strike the chords of harp and lute; let no sweet music now be mute."
