A joy to perform
David Bartons setting of Shakespeares O mistress mine is a joy to perform. Bartons work is an English art song in the tradition of Vaughan Williams and Walton, but with his own distinct 21st century voice. The vocal line and piano part both match and vary colours according to the text, giving performers opportunities for expression. It is very much a duet between piano and voice, rather than an accompanied song. There are soaring phrases and lighter passages that vary the listening experience. The piece could be performed as part of a Shakespeare programme, or a collection of English songs. Highly recommended.
