This SATB anthem with piano is a setting of an English version of the ancient Greek Christian poem "Phos hilarion," comparing Jesus to the sun's light. The piano introduction flashes light via quartal harmonies and open fifths. The choir enters in unison with a long crescendo on "O light" culminating in a shift from F to D-flat. Much of the choral writing is in two parts or easy chords and regular rhythms. Sopranos need the high F, and the G and A-flat above are preferred (but not required) in one passage; tenors likewise need the high F and basses the low F. After an intense climax, the piece ends quietly.
