Crüger was a 17th Century cantor, teacher, and hymnist from Prussia (what is now Germany). The text was based on the manger scene out of the Gospel according to Luke. Thus, the piece should be performed sweetly [Dolce]. A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of section A with the help of a German augmented sixth chord. Section B then includes a descant by yours truly.
