Original title (in French): Cantique de Noël
Lyrics: written in 1843 by the poet Placide Cappeau, at the request of a parish priest in his hometown of Roquemaure, France.
Music: composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 (the same composer who wrote the ballet Giselle).
English translation: created in 1855 by the American pastor John Sullivan Dwight, who published it under the title O Holy Night.

The piece is a solemn meditation on the birth of Jesus, seen as the moment when the world received hope and deliverance.
Its verses evoke the peace and love brought by Christ, the call to brotherhood and justice (“Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother”), and the miracle of the Holy Night, when the divine unites with humanity.

This brass quintet arrangement (two trumpets, horn, trombone, and tuba) explores the harmonic richness and expressive depth of the work through a warm and luminous orchestration.
