Adolphe Adam (1803-56) is perhaps best known for his classical ballet, Giselle, but it is his Cantique de Noël (popularly known in the English-speaking world as ‘O Holy Night’, the opening line of its translated lyrics) that has made him a household name during the Christmas season.
Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) is misschien wel het bekendst vanwege zijn klassieke ballet Giselle, maar het is het lied Cantique de Noël (O Holy Night) dat zijn naam onlosmakelijk verbindt aan de kersttijd. Hij schreefhet lied in Parijs, in de jaren veertig van de negentiende eeuw, voor een hoge solostem met een eenvoudige arpeggio pianobegeleiding. Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure schreef de originele Franse tekst, die later werd vertaald enaangepast door de Amerikaanse predikant John Sullivan Dwight (1812-1893). Een heerlijke klassieker voor de kersttijd!

Sein Weihnachtslied Cantique de Noël aus den 1840er Jahren wurde zunächst von den Kirchenoberen wegen mangelnden musikalischen Geschmacks und einer vollkommene Abwesenheit religiösen Geistes“ kritisiert. Es wurde jedoch so beliebt, dass es auch heute noch gerne gesungen und gehört wird. Inzwischen ist es ein Klassiker, der auch Ihr Publikum in Weihnachtsstimmung versetzen wird.
Nel 1847 Adolphe Adam compone il Cantico di Natale sul poema Mezzanotte, Cristiani di Placide Cappeau. La Chiesa emise vive critiche nei confronti della musica giudicata troppo pomposa e dal testo pagano. A torto, dato che il cantico delizier il mondo intero, fino ai nostri giorni. Philip Sparke ha realizzato uno splendido arrangiamento per banda.
