The Raven of Freedom is a tribute to Miguel Torga, inspired by the final tale of his book Bichos. The work reflects my personal reading of the writer’s biography, drawing a parallel with his creature ‘Vicente’, who, in defence of his freedom, dared to defy God.
The composition is structured in six sections, written for five instruments — numbers that evoke Miguel (6) Torga (5). Its harmonic organisation follows the complex [6, 5, 9, 7], intertwining my own numbers with Torga’s in a symbolic gesture of creative fusion.
Each section is preceded by a guiding phrase, inspired by the tale, which may be spoken during performance or included in the programme notes, serving as a poetic thread running through the work.
1.- The company of the chosen stepped into the Ark.
2.- For forty days he had taken his daily portion from Noah’s dutiful, almost servile hands.
3.- He rose above the instinct of self‑preservation and, with his breast laid bare, fled in protest against the decree that divided beings into the chosen and the condemned.
4.- The voice of God rolled across the vast heavens with thunderous severity. On a tiny island of firmness amid a shifting abyss, the raven stood—black, unflinching, serene.
5.- Death itself feared death. Either the Lord preserved the grandeur of that genesis moment, or its obliteration would undo that supreme hour.
6.- Nothing could withstand that unyielding will to be free. To preserve His own creation, God closed —melancholically— the floodgates of heaven.

5.- A morte temia a morte.
