I love carols in minor keys because there is so much scope for playing around with the harmony. If you would like to watch a video of a professional quartet playing my arrangement on Youtube, look up my channel by typing Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, O Come Emmanuel. They play it beautifully, but it could also be played by a very young quartet because the double stopping could easily be played on open strings. Grade 5 ABRSM could manage it, and possible Grade 3! It will sound mediaeval with the open strings ringing out. The key is a very easy one for strings. There are a few surprises in the counting so watch out! It isn’t always obvious, but with a few rehearsals will give you a fresh take on a very old carol. It would be great for a string orchestra, or a quartet in an end of term carol service. I used to be a teacher so I would love to see some young people enjoying it! If you perform it, take a video, even if on a phone, and send it to me on Facebook.
