This is a new descant to verse 3 of this carol ("Sing, Choirs of Angels")
The best-known descant is that by David Willcocks, published in Carols for Choirs. However, I was taught one important rule for composing a descant:
Always let the people have their moment!
In other words, allow those who are singing the main melody to enjoy their top note. The Willcocks descant shamefully breaks that rule, on "Glory to God", smothering the congregation's climax note with a high G from the choir.
I've remedied this, by bringing in the descant half a bar later, and have also allowed the melody to come through on the second "Oh come, let us adore him".
The harmony should be in the organ only: those not singing the descant should be in unison. This descant only works above the harmony written here: don't mix it with any other version.
I hope you, your choir and your congregation will enjoy this alternative to the ubiquitous version.
