The anonymous text (here in slightly altered form and with modern punctuation) is in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow, manuscript iii, f.2v. The Mediaeval Carol is frequently found in rondo form - a Burden (refrain) alternating with verses. The verses may well have been sung by a soloist with the whole group falling in to sing the Burden. The present setting tries to emulate the popular nature of these early carols. A hint of the original 15th century tune may be spotted in the refrain. Gabriel is frequently represented in iconographical sources as playing the horn. Duration: 4'00.
