Wenzeslaus Thomas Matiegka wurde am 6. Juli 1773 in Chotzen (Böhmen) getauft und starb am 19. Januar 1830 in Wien. Neben seinem Jurastudium an der Prager Universität erhielt er eine musische Ausbildung auf dem Klavier und der Gitarre. Um 1800 kam er nach Wien, wo er sich als Chordirigent und Pädagoge, als Gitarrist und Komponist betätigte. Trotz großer musikalischer Anerkennung starb er in ärmlichen Verhältnissen. Seine Kompositionen - bekannt sind bisher über 40 Werke der Solo- und Kammermusik - erschienen in allen großen Wiener Verlagshäusern sowie in Deutschland und Frankreich. Das Notturno op. 21 ist heute vor allem deshalb bekannt, weil es als Vorlage für die Quartettbearbeitung D96 von Franz Schubert diente, der dem Trio eine zusätzliche Cellostimme hinzufügte. In der vorliegenden Neuausgabe wurde der Notensatz der Ausgabe von 1960 übernommen, Fehler wurden korrigiert und das Layout leicht modernisiert. Neu sind ein Vorwort und ein Revisionsbericht.
