Country radio stations stopped playing their music, thousands called in to complain, and the group received death threats. Three years later, The Chicks answered back. Co-writer Dan Wilson arrived at the writing session with a more conciliatory idea; Maines said no. Wilson then suggested “I’m not ready to make nice” — something that didn’t back down but still carried vulnerability. The song won three Grammy Awards in 2007: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Maddux’s TTBB arrangement opens with a simmering, fragmented refrain before the full chorus erupts — controlled fury that builds to an unforgettable finish. The most politically charged number in the revue, and the one that earns a standing ovation.
