The film and song both owe their title to 9to5, an organization founded in 1973 to fight for fair pay and equal treatment for women in the workplace. The song hit No. 1 simultaneously on the Billboard Country, Hot 100, and Adult Contemporary charts in 1981 — a crossover trifecta — and won Grammy Awards for Best Country Song and Best Country Vocal Performance. Jane Fonda, watching Parton demo it on set, turned to Lily Tomlin and said: “This is not just a movie song.
