"9 to 5" is Dolly Parton's iconic 1980 anthem from the film of the same name, featuring one of the most instantly recognizable typewriter-inspired rhythms in pop music history. "9 to 5" is an essential choice for beginner to intermediate bands looking to build ensemble tightness and rhythmic precision through infectious, approachable country-pop. The guitar and keyboard work centers on steady syncopated patterns that lock with the distinctive snap-clap percussion, teaching musicians how to maintain a driving groove while supporting the vocal narrative. The bass line walks a simple but effective path, providing steady quarter-note foundation that allows the syncopation above to shine. For singers, "9 to 5" offers an excellent opportunity to work on storytelling, clear diction, and delivering lyrics with personality and humor while navigating the song's conversational phrasing. The song's empowering message, cross-generational appeal, and irresistible sing-along chorus make it a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that connects with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

A NOTE ABOUT DR. TOMS CHARTS
DR. TOMS CHARTS help musicians make more music together. Inspired by the Nashville Number System and the classic Rise Up Singing, these charts emphasize song form with lyrics overlaid on top of evenly spaced chords. These musical roadmaps let you focus on what you love: vocal delivery, groove, harmonies, feel, and more! You can even experiment with different styles and meters.

In the HYBRID chart, the first chord of each line aligns with the first word or syllable on the downbeat, highlighting pickups and delayed entries. Subsequent chords may not align exactly with every word, but once the singer nails the entry, everything locks in! This format might look unfamiliar at first, but evenly spaced chords improve groove and accuracy. The harmonic rhythm guides the melody! For singers, the LYRICS ONLY chart provides all the words with rehearsal cues (intros, verses, bridges, solos).

Keep on jammin!
