Composed by Colin Brumby. Text: Liturgy of the Hours. Third three of nine Responsories for Tenebrae. Lent. Holy Week. Octavo. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.5203).
The Nine Tenebr! Responsories, published in three volumes, come from the traditional Tenebr! service. This was celebrated on the evening before Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. It consisted of combined Matins and Lauds for the following day, sung in choir, plus some additional ceremonial which included the extinguishing of candles placed in a 15-candle holder. The responsories which Dr. Brumby has set are from the three Nocturns of Matins for Good Friday. Each Nocturn was arranged with three Psalms with Antiphons, then three Lessons, each followed by its own Responsory. The texts in Volume 3 (taken from the Third Nocturn) are titled: They Delivered Me into the Hands of the Impious (Tradiderunt me in manus impiorum), The Wicked Man Betrayed Jesus (Jesum tradidit impius), and My Eyes Became Dim with Weeping (Caligaverunt oculi mei). Each of the Nine Tenebr! Responsories is set as a two-part canon for equal or mixed voices with organ accompaniment. They would be appropriate musical additions to a Tenebr! Service during Holy Week, or perhaps as part of a mid-week service during Lent.
