For String Quartet
Nimrod is the ninth variation from Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Composed in honor of his friend, Augustus J. Jaeger, who supported his artistic efforts, this Nimrod movement suggests the melancholy feeling of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8 the Pathétique.
Directors should make an effort to hear the full orchestral version of Nimrod in order to get a sense of this highly rubato work that has been recorded over fifty times. Unlike the professional orchestral versions on YouTube, the director will find it beneficial to conduct the movement in a subdivided three. This will help students maintain a stronger sense of rhythmic security at this very slow tempo quarter note = 40. The dynamic changes, although very slight at times, must be observed to keep the audience attention focused at this slow tempo. A Violin III part, Substitute for Viola, is included.
