This humourous piece has a serious intention and grew from a series of experimental warm ups at the start of lessons. Its aim is to target various finger co-ordinations to help achieve equality between fingers.
Intentionally limited range from low G to ‘throat’ A (Chalumeau register) for ease of reading and playing. It is written in C, so relatively easy to read and has 6 contrasting sections which can be practised separately.
Due to the sequential nature of the piece, relatively comfortable fingering patterns are followed by more awkward ones so that keeping the fingers close and relaxed is the goal (hence ‘Neat Fingers’).
Players with a year’s experience or more can gradually achieve neat fingers by starting at a slower tempo but the benefit for more advanced players will come when the speed is increased.
I added the quirky piano accompaniment to provide a metronomic framework but also to complete the computer game feel and add to the fun.
