"Nearer, My God, to Thee" is a Christian hymn , written in 1841 by Sarah Adams, about the Biblical story of Jacob's dream of a ladder (or stairway) to heaven, with angels ascending and descending it. Several composers created a melody based on the lyrics. In most countries, the hymn is usually sung to the 1856 tune "Bethany" by Lowell Mason. "Nearer, my God, to Thee" became especially well-known in the film Titanic when the string ensemble performed this beautiful melody as the ship sank, symbolizing the ladder or stairway to heaven. Pieter Bongaarts arranged this exceptionally beautiful melody for SATB mixed choir with piano accompaniment.
