An 18th-Century Christmas Favourite for SATB Choir + Piano

In many regions of Italy, the sound of bagpipes fills market squares and Christmas markets during the winter months. Traditionally, the zampognari—Italian bagpipers—were shepherds who descended from the mountains at Christmastime to reunite with their families. To earn extra income, they would perform for villagers and townspeople. This carol has long been a favourite among the zampognari and is known in Italian as Canzone di Zampognari (Carol of the Bagpipers).

I first encountered this melody as a child when it appeared as a Christmas pop song, Bambino, performed by The Springfields. It’s one of those tunes that always returns to my mind each Christmas. Curious whether a choral arrangement existed, I began to research and discovered that Bambino was adapted from an old Italian carol titled Quanno nascette Ninno (When the Child Was Born), composed by Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (1696–1787), a Bishop from Naples who was later canonized.

This SATB arrangement is based on the original 18th-century Neapolitan melody. To evoke the sound of the traditional bagpipe drone, the bass line features a sustained drone in Verses 1 and 3, with the alto line taking it up in Verse 2. Sally Bauer’s sensitive piano accompaniment further enhances the bagpipe-like atmosphere. The English lyrics are a translation of the original Neapolitan dialect, adapted to suit the musical phrasing.

My local community choir has thoroughly enjoyed performing this arrangement— I hope your choir finds joy in it too.
